Dhammapada; Twin Verses (selection)

1) All that we are is the result of what we have thought.
__It is "founded on our thoughts. It is made up of our thoughts.
__If one speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows one,
__as a vehicle follows the tow-truck that pulls it.

2) All that we are is the result of what we have thought.
__It is founded on our thoughts. It is made up of our thoughts.
__If one speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows one,
__like a shadow that never leaves.

3) "She abused me, he beat me, she defeated me, he robbed me":
__In those who harbor such thoughts, anger will never cease.

4) "She abused me, he beat me, she defeated me, he robbed me":
__In those who do not harbor such thoughts, hatred will cease.

5) For never does hatred cease by hatred at any time.
__Hatred ceases by love. This is an eternal law.

6) Everyone in the world does not know
__that we must all come to end here,
__but those who do know,
__their quarrels cease at once.

It's not enough to have 'good' thoughts.
That's 'works' in the Christian tradition,
and it creates and supports the alienated, anxious 'self'.

'Self' exists in duality.

'Original Sin'- knowing Good and Evil, is entry into Duality.
Alienation emprisons one, giving rise to anxiety and
hostility with everything that isn't 'self'.

Love can happen when 'self' dissolves into 'the One' (5).
In Zen this is- 'Finding one's original face';
in Christianity- 'Christ who lives in me.'

Participation in the 'One' produces insight into emptiness- 'we must all come to end here', which gives freedom from self, and results in peace and joy.

When Jesus said; 'I give you my peace.' this is what he meant.
We are called to accept the teaching, follow the path and
discover 'our' true nature as the 'One'.

It's not blasphemy to be the 'One'.
Jesus said; 'The Father and I are one.'
And we are taught to discover this for ourselves.

If you think of Jesus as being 'better' and separate from you,
you will always remain in duality, or 'sin'
(separation and 'missing the mark'.)
If you think of yourself as 'good' because you are 'One'
you will fall into duality!
You are neither 'good' or 'evil', but 'One'.
Let go of dualistic thinking and return to original 'One'.

Realization implies non-distict inclusion.

(If you were 'part' of the One,
calling upon some 'other' to aid or purify you,
you'd still be distinct and alienated.)

PRACTICE: Be mindful of thoughts and feelings that appear.
Notice them, but don't accept and empower them.
These thougths and feelings are NOT you, nor are they YOURS.
Let them go and they will move on their way.
Try imagining they are like clouds that float freely in the sky.
Practice mindfulness every moment you can;
you'll notice changes in your perception of who you are.

Silence

Silence We cannot find God in noise and agitation. Nature: trees, flowers, and grass grow in silence. The stars, the moon, and the sun move in silence. What is essential is not what we say but what God tells us and what He tells others through us. In silence He listens to us; in silence He speaks to our souls. In silence we are granted the privilege of listening to His voice. Silence of our eyes. Silence of our ears. Silence of our mouths. Silence of our minds. ...in the silence of the heart God will speak. ---Mother Teresa, from No Greater Love

Know yourself

Suffering comes from separateness and alienation, with the resulting futile attempts to correct one's alienated state. Buddhism says you are already Buddha- there's no need to struggle to 'better' yourself or to 'become' Buddha. Reality is not the problem. There's no need to improve things as they are. Reality is hidden from most people, because they're preoccupied with their own perspectives. It's not hidden purposefully, as if by some evil power. The good news is that YOU HAVE EYES TO SEE, and once you learn to use them you will be able to see clearly. Learning to see, or being conscious, is challenging. Culture (I don't like to use the phrase 'the World', because Truth is infused in all creation) doesn't support consciousness; which leads to freedom from all cultures (human created systems.) The journey is one of 'waking up' (realizing 'Buddha', or 'Christ living in me') and coming to see reality apa...

What makes a religious tradition valuable?

. Any particular religious tradition doesn't 'contain' the TRUTH more than another. It's in a tradition's ability to transform a person that makes that tradition valuable. The value or truth in a tradition is subjective, so let go of conviction that causes animosity towards traditions that are different from 'yours'. Matthew
