Freedom from thoughts is what's needed, not better thoughts.

I'm continually amazed how many people believe they can think their way to know Reality! It's a very strange theory, but there certainly are a lot of people who have bought it.

The central message revolves around 'self'...ah yes, the 'self' (I'll talk about this theory another time.) The theory says that self, by way of rational thought and repeatable experiments, will be able to know (thoughts again) what is real (having reality it itself; or as Buddhist's say- "real from it's own side"), and by way of this knowledge (putting it to use, by manipulating reality) find true happiness. That's quite a theory!

I've never heard of anyone becoming truly happy by using the theory. I suspect it's rather like being born, but never dying. Yet I'd guess over 99% of post-modern Westerners believe the theory and hold onto it throughout their lives. (That's great brainwashing!) I hope it's comforting, because that's about all it's good for (and with medical assistance, perhaps a few more years of suffering.)

Now for the sad part- believing this theory makes you a prisoner of your thoughts. So long as you hold onto this theory you'll NEVER find freedom; and without freedom you'll suffer. One needn't think to know.

Can you be certain?

. When something happens in your life, how often have you lost your sense of peace? I see this happen to people often; usually peace is relinquished by negative emotions or thoughts. Who in their 'right mind' would relinquish peace for irritation/anger (suffering)? It's obvious that what happens to us isn't unique. No matter what you experience you can always imagine others (or actually know someone) who experience similar things and some could be said to be 'better' or 'worse' off than you are. No one is alone and this is a clue to 'escape' from the judging mind. To judge/label an event as 'GOOD' or 'BAD' can't be completely certain; since either choice presupposes a 'correct' way to decide. There is no way to know which one is correct, and the choice is usually biased by desire, that is, "what do I WANT". When you choose sides you've trapped yourself in a fantasy prison (in your mind). There is no ...

What makes a religious tradition valuable?

. Any particular religious tradition doesn't 'contain' the TRUTH more than another. It's in a tradition's ability to transform a person that makes that tradition valuable. The value or truth in a tradition is subjective, so let go of conviction that causes animosity towards traditions that are different from 'yours'. Matthew
